Yule Tide Shanty ~ Download Song

It is thought by some that yul is an ancient Norse word for 'wheel'. The Norse were a seafaring people.  Apparently they also had a sense of humour.  Tides go round with the moon, wheels (even the Great Wheel) go round, ergo 'Yule Tide' - a play on words much, much older than this song.

Please sing it along with Auld Lang Syne at New Year - or any time you darn well feel like it.  Download Song

Chorus:
And we'll raise a glass
As the old year does pass
And we’ll raise a cheer, for the incoming year
As we sail on the Yule Tide, me brave boys
As we sail on the Yule Tide

A toast to the skipper,   He stands without fear
The wind cuts his face,  And there's ice in his beard
He stands firm at the wheel,  As he brings her around
With an eye on the weather,  He's homeward bound.

A toast to the crew,  Those jolly brave men
They won't stay home long ,  They'll be sailing again
As soon as the sun,  Lights up the dark days
They'll pack up their gear,  And be down to the quay

We race with the wind, We dance with the swells
The sea knows our secrets,  But she never tells
And each sailor knows, As he hoists the white sails
We’ll rest when she’s tranquil, Or battle the gales

A toast to the women, We love with a will
Each year that goes by, They grow fairer still
A toast to the sun, The moon and the stars
As they swing round the heavens, Guiding jolly jack tar
